Little Sins: Gossip
Little Sins Week 1
Middle & High School Students
Wednesday, March 5th
6:30 – 8:30
PREPARING FOR iGROUPS
BOTTOM LINE: Gossip corrupts everyone involved, so instead, use your words to build up and give life.
SCRIPTURE: Proverbs 18:21
GOAL OF SMALL GROUP: To encourage students to recognize sin is sin. The sin in our lives is equally destructive to our relationships with God, our friends, family members, and ourselves.
TRY THIS: Ask the students in your Small Group for a schedule for any upcoming events they have going on, like a sporting event, a game, a school play, a competition, or a concert. It’s a great opportunity for you and the other students in your group to show up and support each other. Try to attend one event for each student if you can!
Just for fun… Play a quick game of “telephone” to re-illustrate how news can turn into something completely different in a short period of time.
Ask the group to answer and discuss…
1 Read Proverbs 18:21. As a group summarize what that verse means.
2 Read Proverbs 18:21 again.
a) What can this verse teach us about God?
b) Does God like gossip?
c) Does this scripture teach you anything about yourself?
3 Make 2 lists to compare what your group considers “big sins” & “little sins”.
4 Rate on a scale of 1-10, how tempting gossip is for you.
a) What makes gossip feel so tempting?
b) Is it more tempting to listen to gossip or spread gossip?
5 How does gossip hurt everyone involved? Is it hard for you to believe that it hurts BOTH the gossiper and the listener? Why or why not?
6 Rate on a scale of 1-10, How difficult it is to NOT gossip. List some ways you can avoid gossiping about others
7 Why is it important for us to “give life” with our words? List some examples of how to do this.
8 Decide how you plan to avoid gossip and “give life” to those around you this week. Share with the group so you can hold each other accountable.
